Behind the Scenes: Custom Crane Lights for the Port of Amsterdam

Port crane lighting at night

Background Story

In May and June of last year, our Belgian customer received an order from the port of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. The port’s crane lights, after 2-3 years of use, had become badly corroded due to the sea breeze, making them impossible to remove. The company that originally produced these lights had gone out of business, leaving our customer in urgent need of replacement lights of superior quality.

Challenges and Innovation

Faced with this challenge, our KEMOTRONICS team quickly assembled a group of electronic engineers, design engineers, and production managers to start the design discussion. The customer provided us with only a reference picture, with no physical sample available. We identified several key requirements:

  1. The lights must be rust-resistant and replaceable.
  2. The lights must be earthquake-resistant as they are used in a port.
  3. Light efficiency and angle must be considered.
  4. The order quantity was small, so we needed to avoid increasing the customer’s mold costs.

After an intensive day of design work, we presented the initial design draft. We swiftly adjusted it based on customer feedback and eventually developed a perfect custom solution.

Final Results

We used anti-salt fog screws, treated the light surface with a three-proof coating (waterproof, windproof, and corrosion-resistant), and added innovative features like stainless steel parts with nuts and an earthquake wire to ensure the lights wouldn’t fall off during high-frequency vibrations. Our design not only met the customer’s needs but exceeded their expectations, helping them save on costs.
